Matariki 2022

24
Jun

Matariki is the Maori name for the small cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters, in the Taurus constellation.

In New Zealand it comes into view low on the north-eastern horizon, appearing in the tail of the Milky Way in the last days of May or in early June, just before dawn.

For the very first time New Zealand will have a public holiday to celebrate this uniquely Kiwi event.

This heralds the Maori New Year. To celebrate I will be training on the beach at Scorching Bay before sunrise (about 6am)

Keeping our Karate Family Safe

14
Apr
2022

The person who was my inspiration for setting up the club is extremely ill with COVID. He has reduced lung capacity and is in a bad way. He happens to be a high ranking black belt. So not a weakling.

Just because governments are easing restrictions does not mean the virus is not out there doing what viruses do best.

So if you are unwell please stay away from the dojo and be proactive in protecting our karate family.

Be safe, be kind.

Special Easter Class

Instead there will be a 60 minute online training session with Sensei, which starts at 6:30pm on Wednesday 23rd March. You can wear your Gi or not, it is up to you. We will follow the normal class format. If you want to focus on anything let Sensei know and he will adjust the class plan.

World Down Syndrome Day 2022

21
Mar
2022

Today is World Down Syndrome Day! The reality is that people with Down syndrome and disabilities do not benefit from full and effective participation and inclusion in society. Talk to your friends, family and places of work about ways you can be more inclusive. Everyone benefits!

What is Down syndrome? Down syndrome (or Trisomy 21) is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always been a part of the human condition.

COVID Contact at the Club

17
Mar
2022

A student who attended the first class on Wednesday 17th March has tested positive for COVID. I am sure that everyone will join me in wishing them a speedy recovery.
I will be self-isolating for the next couple of days as I am a close contact and testing myself at the weekend. I would recommend that this would be a good course of action for anyone else who attended the first class.

For students in the second class you would not be considered a close contact of the student. However, I will be testing myself on Saturday if the result is positive I will let you all know straight away.

So as part of our self-defense against COVID there will not be a class next week (23rd March). I will set up a Zoom class for any students that want to train with me next week. Once again we send all our aroha to our poorly student and their family.

The link below is to the health website pages for close contacts.

Be safe. Be kind.
